[edit] About

The University of Nottingham Latin, Ballroom and Salsa Society (LBSS) aims to provide members with tuition in Latin, Ballroom, Salsa and Rock 'n' Roll styles of dance. The society equips and teaches a Latin and Ballroom Team which represents the university at competitions around the country. There is also a Salsa Demo Team which performs demonstrations at balls and events.

With over 600 members and events nearly everyday, LBSS is one of the most active societies on campus.

[edit] Socials

We run several socials throughout the year. The most notable of these are the Sticker Social at the start of the year, the Christmas social and the Easter Ball. We also organised the Latino Fiesta last year in combination with Capoeira Society, Hispanic Society and SCA. It was a huge success, attracting hundreds of people and raising over a thousand pounds for charity. Watch out for it this year, as we hope to make it an annual event. Further to these socials, we organise several socials for our L&B Team and Salsa Demo Team, including team meals and trips to salsa clubs.

[edit] Practice Sessions

We run several practice sessions through the week. Some of these are just for our Salsa and L&B Teams, so that they can practise for demos or competitions. However, some of our sessions are for the society as a whole, and we encourage members to come along and practise what they learn in class.

[edit] Workshops

We run workshops throughout the year, generally on Tuesdays. In the past, these have included workshops in Rock 'n' Roll, Argentine Tango, Cuban Salsa and Lindyhop, as well as taster sessions in Latin, Ballroom and Salsa.

[edit] Competitions

The L&B Team attends several competitions during the year. This year we have travelled to Blackpool, Sheffield, Keele and Manchester among others. As well as competitions at other universities, we organise our own Nottingham Varsity Ball. Other than the IVDC, this is one of the biggest competitions of the year, with around 600 competitors from universities across the country. This year, it will be held on November 24th 2007 in the Portland Leisure Centre.

[edit] Latin and Ballroom Team

The Latin and Ballroom Team has been established for many years, and competes regularly in inter-varsity competitions. Our team is fairly large, and includes absolute beginners, right up to people with years of experience. The only requisite is that you are willing to work at your dancing and enjoy it! If you're interested in joining the L&B Team, email the L&B Team Captains, as per below.

[edit] Demonstrations

If you're organising an event and are looking for demonstrations, we could help. Our Salsa Demo Team and our leading Latin and Ballroom couples regularly perform for other societies or course balls. In the past year we've performed at the Pharmacy Ball, the ISB Ball, the Society Awards Ball and the Latino Fiesta to name just a few.

Whether you're after a spectacular Rueda, sexy Salsa, sensual Rumba, lively Samba or majestic Waltz, we'll have something for you. If you're interested, contact the President as per below.
