The Genshiken Society is the society for you if you like watching anime, gaming, reading manga, going to the theatre, going to the cinema or just watching films, and fancy doing these things in a group, and maybe having a chat about it afterwards.

So, for example, instead of sitting alone in your uni room watching your series or film of choice on the small screen of your computer, why not join us for our bi-weekly get-togethers, where you can watch it projected onto a big screen, then discuss it with lovely and like-minded (or sometimes not) new friends? Or perhaps you like gaming? We have a range of consoles that we regularly bring to meetings, and have tournaments with each other, or just play for fun! Nintendo Wii on the big screen is particularly entertaining, especially games like ‘Wii Sports’ and ‘Warioware’.

We get asked all the time what our name means, and occasionally how it’s pronounced (I overheard someone once call it the ‘Get Chicken Society’, which I can assure you is wrong), so after some research, we’ve come up with a definitive meaning: ‘Genshiken’ is a Japanese portmanteau word made up of the words gendai, which means contemporary; shikaku, meaning visual; and en, meaning bond, or kinship. And hey, it’s pronounced exactly how it looks, genn-shick-enn. We actually took the name from the title of an anime and manga series that gave us the idea for the society in the first place, so if you’ve read or watched it, you sort of get where we’re coming from, only we’re a lot less intimidating, and there’s no embarrassing initiation (ooh…getting an idea…).

A standard meeting goes like this: We get to the booked room (at DeHav this year) at 6ish, and set up the technological bits like consoles, laptops and music, and have a chat about what we fancy doing. People can bring along any DVDs or things on USB that they fancy watching, and extra controllers if they have them, as our meetings are usually pretty flexible regarding what we want to do. We’ll usually watch a few episodes of anime, or sometimes TV series like ‘Heroes,’ then maybe a film, and we almost always play something on the Wii or Playstation. People are obviously free to come and go as they please, and we often get snacks mid-way through, as all that gaming can be hungry-making work. Then, at about 10ish, we part company, although often a lot of us are walking in the same direction home, so it’s not so easy to escape one-another. And that’s it! We have meetings every other week as we found that’s the perfect balance of having time to do other stuff, and being able to catch up regularly. Of course, if you do get lonely in the meantime, we always have some lively discussions on our web forum, where members can discuss stuff from meetings, and also completely different matters on the many different boards, catering for all your modern visual cultural interests.

Sometimes, on really special occasions, we are lucky enough to be let out of uni for the day, and we make full use of the freedom this affords us! Last year we went on quite a few days out to London, including the LondonExpo in October (which we plan on attending again this year) which was a lovely day out, and a marvellous excuse to flash a bit of cash (or flesh if you’re into cosplay).

So there we go, a brief introduction to the wonderful world of Genshiken, or Genshi, as she’s known to her friends ^-^. We hope you like us.
