Learning Enterprises
Learning Enterprises is an incredible organisation. We exist as a student run NGO which advertises in UK and US universities to set up volunteer teaching experiences in 14 countries across the world. The mission of Learning Enterprises is to expand horizons by organizing conversation-based English language classes taught by international volunteers. Our program benefits both the children in developing countries who take part in our classes and our volunteers who work as teachers for the summer. Our mission is guided by five principles: fostering creativity in children and adults, expanding horizons though access to the English language as means of communication, promoting understanding through cross-cultural exchange, spreading the spirit of volunteerism, and providing substantive and rewarding work experience for young people.
What makes us different from other volunteering programmes?
There is no charge for program participation
The biggest difference between Learning Enterprises and other service organizations is that we don't charge our volunteers for the privilege of volunteering abroad. Most other organizations charge volunteers hundreds, even thousands, of dollars to participate in their program. This holds true across a wide spectrum of service opportunities, including teaching English, reconstructing war torn areas, or other service related activities. Learning Enterprises only asks that volunteers pay for their airfare to the country in which they will teach. A host family will provide room and board free of charge, and volunteers may have to cover small incidental costs such as snacks or drinks, as well as food and lodging during the program orientation
'You control your experience'
Unlike other international volunteer organizations, we do not assign you to your location - you tell us where you want to go. With programs currently active in eight countries on four continents, we offer something interesting for almost everyone. If your dream is to go to China, we are certainly not going to ask you to go to Mexico. You are paying your travel expenses and volunteering your time, and we believe that you deserve to make the decisions about what kind of experience you want to have, as well as where you want to have it.
In the classroom, you have control. We support all our volunteers with a full-day training course in the U.S., a four-day orientation in your chosen country, and copies of our teaching manual. We can arm you with the tools to lead a class, but you are responsible for developing a curriculum that best suits your class. Our goal is to increase communication. If the most effective way you communicate is through games, or sports, or some other means then that is how you should teach. By choosing you as a volunteer we are expressing faith in your ability to do the job.
While you do have a set work schedule, your free time is yours. We encourage all volunteers to spend as much time as possible with their host families, students, and communities, but you do what makes you most comfortable. You do not need approval to leave your host community - though please do notify your hosts of where you will be. They worry! Your weekends are yours to travel and experience others aspects of this new country in which you are living
I worked with Learning Enterprises in Mauritius and had the most incredible experience of my life so far. I am now Campus Director at Brighton University. We will be accepting applications on our website (www.learningenterprises.org) from 01 Jan 07. Good Luck!
