[edit] Introduction

We are a Student society of the University of Brighton as well as a British Red Cross Group. Through the British Red Cross Society we provide first aid training to our members as well as first aid and ambulance cover at local and national events. These can be anything from village fetes to rock concerts on the beach. The training we provide give members the practical skills to go on their first duty with training in extended skills to expand on this knowledge.

As a university society we organise and encourage a varied social atmosphere, essential to university life. Due to being a University society we can only accept membership from students or staff of Brighton University or its associate colleges.

[edit] Training

We provide our training through the British Red Cross; this training is free provided that you attend at least 10 hours of first aid duty or other volunteer work with the Red Cross. At the start of the Academic year we run the Save a life course. This usually runs for the first two weeks as an introduction to first aid as well as training you in CPR and basic lifesaving procedures. This is offered free with no strings attached. Once this is completed we start the Standard First Aid course in earnest which will provide you with most of the necessary skills to attend your first duty. This course usually runs for about 14 weeks and is taught through a mixture of lecture style presentations and hands-on practicals.

The Standard First Aid Course covers 11 core areas:
Being a first aider
Lifesaving procedures (CPR and recovery position)
Respiratory problems
Heart and circulatory problems
Wounds and bleeding
Bone, joint and muscle injuries
Nervous system problems
Environmental injuries
Foreign objects
Poisoning, bites and stings
Medical problems

Straight after the Standard course, you will have two weeks of Manual handling training, which is not as bad as it seems as most of the course is practical.
At some point in the Academic year we run Red Cross World which is an introduction to the Red Cross, Red Crescent and Red Crystal movements, the core values and history of the three movements.
Courses in extended skills are run throughout the year for those members that are already qualified. This includes the use of a Defibrillator, Medical Gasses, Resuscitation Support & Monitoring, Applied Anatomy & Physiology, Trauma Management and Working with Other Services. From there you can progress onto the IHCD Ambulance Crew qualification, which will enable you use British Red Cross ambulances. Progression to this level is not easy, and a decent amount of first aid experience is necessary.

[edit] Social

We have regular socials throughout the year, to integrate the group and to get to know everyone. Socials can range from just going to a pub to clubbing. We also organise days / evenings out like bowling or paintballing. In December we have a Christmas meal at Lloyd’s No1 bar in the Marina, where there is cheap food, cheap beer and good music.

We meet at the Lectern pub (next door) after most meetings for a couple of drinks. If anyone has any ideas for socials then let us know. The British Red Cross brings together people of all ages and walks of life, so is a great opportunity to meet people!
