[edit] Introduction

Water Polo has long been an integral sport at the University of Birmingham, and its reputation throughout the University has continued to grow, particularly in recent years, as has its competitive success.

Every year the team welcomes Freshers and introduces them to the sport of Water Polo boasting a large, welcoming and friendly group of Senior players, eager to maintain their Water Polo and keen to help teach and develop Freshers’ skills.

The Club is always delighted to welcome new members of all abilities, whatever their level of skill and experience, and is dedicated to advancing these skills, abilites and fitness. This enables both the Men’s and Women’s teams to compete and achieve at the highest levels of competition, especially BUSA. The Club boasts a dedicated and experienced coach in Vargin Yeke, a former Turkish International player who joined in 2006. He is highly involved in the development and advancement of the teams in all areas. He is very committed and his training regime is challenging but worthwhile. Both Men’s and Women’s team are selected purely on merit and ability so the teams are a balanced mixture of Freshers and Seniors. The success of the teams enables them to partake in and enjoy competitions and tournaments both at home and abroad. The team annually participates in the South Derbyshire Open Water Polo Tournament, as well as tournaments held in Salou, in Spain, and in Compiégne, in France.

The Water Polo Team is considered by its members to be more than just an extra curricular activity or sport. With its members forming close and bonding friendships thanks to a serious and professional approach both in competition and training, and also as a result of an active, fun filled and very eventful social life. Notable social events of the Polo calendar include the Christmas Party, AU Ball, AU Superstars, Old Boys Day, as well as numerous Sports Nights!!

The University of Birmingham Water Polo Team is proud and excited to welcome all new members! If you are interested in a new water borne sport, or want to try something different or an alternative to Swimming, why not come and try Water Polo! You never know, it might just be the challenge you are looking for. We can be found either at the Freshers Sports Fayre, or by the poolside every Monday and Thursday. [edit] Recent Achievements

Both Birmingham’s Men and Women’s Water Polo Teams retained their positions in the BUSA League tables:

Women in Tier 1

Men in Tier 2

In the previous Water Polo Year, 2006-2007, the Women’s Water Polo Team successfully competed in and won the Tier 2 Women’s BUSA Shield Competition, this result also saw them promoted to BUSA Tier 1 for the 2007-2008 Water Polo Year.

During the recent Easter Holidays a mixed Water Polo Team from the University of Birmingham travelled to and competed in the 12th European Universities Water Polo Tournament held in Compiégne, in France. The teams outstanding performance saw them come 4th out of 12 of the best University teams Europe has on offer.

At the recent South Derbyshire Open Air Water Polo Tournament both Men and Women’s Teams performed highly successfully:

The Men’s team coming 6th out of 18 Teams.

The Women’s team coming 8th out of 18 Teams

The team is proud and pleased to announce the continued service of its coach Vargin Yeke, himself a former International Turkish Water Polo player. His invaluable service, dedication and conditioning of the team is very much a big part of its continued success.

The team is proud to boast that two of its members also represent Great Britain at international level.

Most recently the Mens Water Polo team was able to become the champions of the Tier 2 Shield competition. This means they will be joining the Ladies in Tier 1 for the coming year.
