Sheffield Universities Dancesport
From StudentWiki
Sheffield Universities Dancesport is a highly active society, representing students from both the Sheffield universities. Two societies working in such a partnership is rare but is beneficial to both our team and social dancers.
Unlike many other university teams, we cater for both competitive and casual dancers, holding classes up to three times a week. We encourage anybody to dance in the team, where they can extend and improve their dancing skills over and above the skills we teach in our social classes.

[edit] What we do
We compete on the IVDA (Inter-Varsity Dance Association) circuit in competitions all year round at host universities. We can be competing against up to 20 other universities at a time.
Throughout the year, we are often invited to demonstrate our ballroom and latin talent. We have done demonstrations at fairs, society showcases, balls and the International Fiesta.
Each February, we host the Sheffield Social dance competition. This is the largest dance competition of the year, other than the nationals. It is held in the Octagon Centre on the main Sheffield University campus.
[edit] Our success
Each year, we endeavour to break more records at regional and national level. The 2006/07 year was a very successful one for us, with our A team winning the Northern Universities Dance Association (NUDA) competition, and all dancers performing above expectations at Blackpool for the annual IVDA competition.
Recently, ballroom and latin dancing has seen a revival on the public scene, especially because of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. We have seen a massive increase in members since then, and hope that this increase will continue.
[edit] The future
Dancing ten latin and ballroom dances isn't our only forte - we also compete in Offbeat (Offbeat - the only rule is that the dance must be longer than 3 minutes). In 2004, our Offbeat team won the nationals, and as of 2007, we are reviving our Offbeat team and hope to continue with our previous success. We have also previously competed in Rock and Roll, which is another area we are developing during 2007/08.
