[edit] About

The LGBT Society is a society affiliated to the Union Society of Newcastle University. It has representation on the Union Council via its annually elected LGBT Officers, and a Committee which runs social events. Working closely in partnership with other organisations, most notably the Northumbria University LGBT, it seeks to provide a safe environment for LGBT students to meet and socialise, and aims to engage the student LGBT population in the wider community.

[edit] Membership

Although the society is primarily a meeting place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans students it is open to all members of Newcastle University, regardless of their gender or sexuality. It can be helpful to bring along a friend for added support the first time you come to a meeting. Similarly if you'd like to meet a member of the committee first, so that not everybody is a total stranger the first time you walk into the room, then drop us an e-mail. We're a nice group of people really!

It really does help to talk to people about your problems as to bottle them up doesn't help you in the long run and everyone has the right to feel happy and confident in themselves.

[edit] Confidentiality

Since LGBT socials are open to all students, regardless of their sexuality or whether they are out or not, you should not reveal the identity of those attending any LGBT event to anyone outside the society. Please be aware that not everyone you know from the LGBT may be comfortable acknowledging you in other situations.

[edit] Meetings

Regular meetings are held twice a week and start in the Students Union (details below) but we also run other events from time to time on different days or in different places. To make sure you're informed of all the latest society news, be sure to join the mailing list from the main page of the website.

Wednesday - 2pm, Global Cafe (Top Floor)

Affectionately referred to as 'Cake Wednesdays' despite the lack of cake (since the servery was closed last term), these meetings are a great way to get to know a slightly smaller crowd without the pressure of the Scene/alcohol (not that you HAVE to be tee-total, it's totally your call). We're trying to put things on these afternoons so it's not just the chatting, for example last week we went to the cinema and next week we're looking to go bowling at the Metro Centre.

Thursday - 8pm, Cochrane Lounge (Main Level - turn right at reception)

Traditionally starting at the Union, then heading down the Scene and finishing the night in Powerhouse, we're looking into doing other things here too (karaoke or comedy nights to name but two suggestions batted around recently). It's usually a busier occasion than the Wednesdays but we're all nice people and it's a good chance to see the Scene with people who know what it's all about.

[edit] Joining

If you haven't joined the society already, you can do so at http://www.newcastlelgbt.co.uk/signup

It only costs £5 for the whole year (that's less than you'd pay to get into Powerhouse on a weekend!) and the more members we have, the more events we can arrange for you. It's a fully electronic process meaning you don't have to out yourself to anybody in order to join, and the members list is kept strictly confidential.
