History

The Durham University Pro-Life Society was founded in the academic year 2005-2006 and became an officially ratified DSU society in the same year.

Purpose

The society exists to perform three primary functions:

1. To raise awareness of ethical issues pertaining to human life and human rights. This is done by hosting events at which guest speakers lead discussions in their fields of expertise. Notable past speakers include Ben Johnson MP and Jana Tutkova on behalf of Comment on Reproductive Ethics, London.

2. To take action against human rights abuses by taking part in letter writing campaigns. Recent campaigns include petitioning the Chinese Embassy in protest against the mock trial of Chinese human rights activist Chen Guangcheng.

3. To support positive alternatives to abortion and euthanasia, by raising money for charities such as Zoe's Place, a local baby hospice.
