Durham University Boardriders
From StudentWiki
Durham University Boardriders was started in the spring of 2002 by a group of keen student surfers, and is now going from strength to strength, and has become one of the most exciting clubs in Durham.
Boardriders caters for surfers, windsurfers, bodyboadrers and skateboarders. The majority of members are surfers, and the club runs trips for all abilities. Members of Boardriders recieve big savings on watersports equipment and cut price lessons for those who want surf lessons at nearby Tynemouth.
Durham being located fairly close to the the North sea provides a great location for surfing and other watersports, although colder than many areas in Britain the north sea chill can be overcome by a good wetsuit, 5mm+, most surfers also wear gloves, hoods and boots to keep time in the water to a maximum.
Boardriders is part of Team Durham, and each year usually in March there is a organised trip to Newquay, Cornwall to enter the BUSA Surf Championships (aka student nationals)and party with the rest of the student surfing population at the notorious Fistral beach. Last years result were a marked improvment on past years with the Mens team coming 19 out of 81 teams, and the girls 20 out of 40 teams. This put Durham as the leading surf team in the North East and future prospects look bright for next year. The club also encourage members to enter non university competitions and also runs trips to watch surf competitions.
The Boardriders socials are always great fun and brilliant way to meet fellow members, catch up and have fun.
