Introduction
The Cambridge University Wine Society holds a number of tastings each term. We aim to bring you wines from all over the world, and cater for lovers of everything from port to champagne. The majority of tastings are conducted by region, and will include a range of wines from the inexpensive to the vintage. Tastings are hosted by experts or by the more experienced members of the society.
Whether you are an experienced taster who wishes to add to his knowledge, or a complete beginner who would like to know more about wine than can be gleaned from the back of a bottle, we have plenty to offer you. Most tastings will give you the opportunity not only to try something a little out of the ordinary, but also to note one or two affordable wines for day to day drinking.
The highlight of our calendar is the Annual Dinner, an exquisite meal served with a series of excellent wines. This is traditionally held in the Lent term.
Other annual events include the summer term's garden party - there's no finer way to restart yourself after Suicide Sunday than with an afternoon of champagne and strawberries - guaranteed to chase the hangover away!
Joining the society
Membership in the University Wine Society is a rewarding experience. Our membership is as broad as the University's: from wine aficionados right through to people who just want to try something new. The main benefits of membership are you get a reduced charge for tastings, as opposed to a normal fee for non-members. Additionally as a member you'll receive priority in allocating places for tastings which are oversubscribed.
Members are also able to apply for exclusive dinners during term. Over the past several years, dinners have centered on wines from producers such as Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château D'Yquem and Château Palmer. Among the highlights of the past few years, Wine Society Members have also enjoyed exclusive Champagne tastings with Pol Roger, Gosset, Ruinart, and Bollinger.
Membership to CUWS provides useful discounts which are available at various Cambridge wine retailers, when you produce your Wine Society membership card. These are:
10% discount at Cambridge Wine Merchants
15% discount at Italian Wines Direct on orders made via website, e-mail or telephone
10% discount on tours with Barossa Tours to the Barrossa and Clare Valleys in Australia
In addition, we are always looking for additional privileges for our members, and we shall update you with these as they accrue. If you would like to join, please contact our membership officer.
