Mission Statement: The Cambridge University Energy Network was established to bring together the academic community to share their knowledge and interest in the generation and consumption of energy. It also serves to promote a structured, cross disciplinary approach to teaching and research in sustainable energy.

[edit] The Objectives

The objectives of the Cambridge University Energy Network (CUEN) cover two key points; to inform, and to facilitate cross-disciplinary research for young researchers in the ever-important field of sustainable energy. These two main points are elaborated below.

The Educational Aspect

In aid of serving an informative role, CUEN raises awareness of issues concerning long-term sustainable generation and consumption of energy, and the not-so-insignificant challenges associated with implementation of mitigating technologies to members of the academic community in and around Cambridge. Following awareness and knowledge of the well known problem of climate change, CUEN illuminates the truly multidisciplinary nature of the world's energy problems, which typically involve political, economic, environmental and technological considerations, if climate change is to be addressed in good time. Through dialogue and debate, CUEN sparks interest and promotes the exchange of ideas for environment friendly technologies, and to review the feasibility of existing and proposed implementations.

The Cross-Disciplinary Research Aspect

To complement its educational goals, CUEN serves to inspire potential research recruits, from promising undergraduates to post-docs, and to motivate existing energy researchers to progress in their field. Through the provision of a networking platform, CUEN presents research and funding opportunities to young researchers, who are establishing their research career. CUEN's forums also serve to improve the coordination of research in sustainable energy across departments and collaborative universities, with a view to more effective and efficient research, and to promote the exchange of expertise amongst academics with possible collaborative outcomes. With improved coordination of research activities, there is a better chance that more robust sustainable energy schemes can be implemented more readily, all part of a general effort to preventing ecological desolation to both us and future generations.

[edit] Activities

CUEN organises a series of activities to accomplish the objectives of the society. These activities encompass different aspects of sustainable energy and provide a platform for the exchange and acquisition of knowledge and ideas for members in and around the University. Additionally, through such interaction, the society aims to increase the opportunity of cross-disciplinary research (between the areas of technology, policy and economics), both within and outside of the University, along with collaboration with relevant industries. The society's seminal event is the Cambridge Annual Energy Symposium, which will be held in June 2008.

Discussion Groups

We organise bimonthly discussion groups on various topics with regards to sustainable energy generation and consumption, which usually take place in the first week of the month. The discussion group is an informal gathering of enthusiasts, who include either well informed or just curious people wanting to extend their knowledge about energy issues, and are led by knowledgeable members of the academic community. The discussion groups usually take place within a quiet and relaxed pub setting. For a timetable and venues of the discussion groups for the academic year 2007-2008, please click here. We welcome suggestions of any other topics, which could be considered for future discussion sessions.

Lectures

The lecture series feature prominent academic researchers, representatives from industry and policy makers, who share the latest developments in the various areas of sustainable energy. The talks usually take place in lecture theatres within the University. This lecture series is open to academics, industrialists and others who express interest in the field of sustainable energy. A networking session usually follows after the lecture, and all lectures are free of charge. For a timetable and venues of the lectures during the academic year 2007-2008, please click here. We welcome suggestions of any other topics, which could be considered for future talks.

The Cambridge Annual Energy Symposium

The Cambridge Annual Energy Symposium aims to draw together academics and researchers from science, technology, social-science and policy backgrounds and aims to reflect the broad expertise within the energy research ecosystem at Cambridge.

We invite postgraduate students looking to find direction for their future research and careers, postdoctoral academics who wish to establish their own research in the topic of sustainable energy, established academics looking for ideas or to recruit students in this field, and industrial or commercial entities looking for collaborative research-focused opportunities. Undergraduates seeking opportunities for further studies in a socially relevant area of research will also find this event useful.

One of the aims of the symposium is to give all delegates the opportunity to explore how their interests can mesh within the broader theme of sustainable energy, and therefore we encourage participation at all levels of interest and expertise.

The theme for this year's 2008 Cambridge Annual Energy Symposium is: "Clean Coal Technology - towards a low carbon economy ". Details of this event are shown on these pages.
