Chaos is the University of Bristol Physical and Astronomical Society, winner of the IOP (Institute of Physics) Best Physics Society in the UK award and nominated various times for the UBU Best Departmental Society award. Our aim is 'To provide social and educational events for Physicists and others in Bristol University' (So says our constitution anyway!). Every year we try to organise bigger and better events, from guest lectures on the cutting edge of physics to educational trips abroad, our legendary Freshers Week Pub Crawl, Christmas PhysQuiz, staff vs. student events and our famous Physball, the Summer BBQ… etc! This year we are also introducing a parenting scheme, where each fresher will get assigned a “parent”. A parent is a student in one of the older years, who will be there to answer queries or help students out in a tight spot, or just be around if they want a chat! We are very active in the department, and even have our own shop, the magical Physbar! As the cheapest snack bar in the whole university, it sells all your sugary needs, perfect fuel for those excruciating never-ending lectures. Also, through Nexus (the student wing of the IOP), we team up with other physics societies around the country to bring our members connections with other Physics Students in the UK. Although Physicists may not typically be famous as athletes, our Chaos sport teams make us proud as each year we enter the league and tournament intramural sports events. Previous years’ teams include hockey, football, netball, basketball and badminton. This year we hope to get a rugby team as well, and we need as many recruits as possible to bring victory home! More than all the amazing things we have already offered members, Chaos is an excellent way to get to know others who students will be sitting with in lectures for the next 3 or 4 years and to meet other year groups.
