Bristol University's Big Bands are free to join and open to anyone who plays an instrument! We welcome players of all abilities and experience and have regular socials throughout the year. There are two Big Bands you can join, with rehearsals for each band on Fridays from 5.15pm - 7.30pm:

[edit] Hornstars

The Hornstars
The Hornstars

The Hornstars are the auditioned big band of the University of Bristol, playing a mixture of groovy swing, phat funk and hot latin tunes! The band is well known for providing entertainment at functions throughout both the university and the city as well as outside Bristol. In June 2006 the Hornstars sailed down the Kennet and Avon canal playing gigs at Bath and Avoncliff along the way, while this year the band toured Barcelona to show Spain what we can do!

The Hornstars have also made a name for themselves nationally: last April they made an eight hour journey to Glasgow to take part in the National Concert Band Festival finals. The band, never having even entered the competition before, went on to win the gold award in the Open Big Band category, and drummer Daisy Palmer picked up the award for outstanding soloist. In March this year the band returned to the NCBF finals, this time held in Newcastle, and won the gold award again! For 2007/08 the band is conducted by Will Millard and you can sign up to audition for the Hornstars at FRESH.

To hear what all the fuss is about, check out our Listen section with recordings from previous gigs. If you want to see us live, look at our Gigs page to see when and where we are next playing. To contact or book the band for your own function please visit the Contact page for further information.
